Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan has helped kick off the inaugural Harmony Game of Pollies v Professional soccer match, which was battled out last month.
Harmony Day is celebrated around Australia on 21 March each year. It's a day where all Australians celebrate our cultural diversity. The day is also the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Harmony Day gives people the opportunity to celebrate what makes each Australian unique and share what we have in common.
Mr Tehan joined with his federal parliamentary colleagues to have a friendly game of soccer against Soccer Professionals including former Socceroos and current Matildas players to draw national attention to the importance of harmony and mutual respect across our Nation.
The Pollies were satisfied with the close result, the final score going 7-6 to the Professionals, despite the Pollies being bolstered by having a few extra players on the field.
“The continuing message for Harmony Day in 2011 is that Everyone Belongs, which means all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background,” Mr Tehan said.
“It's about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live.
“I support Harmony Day, and was glad to join with my federal parliamentary colleagues and the soccer professionals to draw attention to the importance of harmony and mutual respect within our community.”
Harmony Day began in 1999 and since then, a wide variety of groups including sports organisations, community groups, local government, schools and businesses have staged more than 25 000 Harmony Day events.
