MEDIA RELEASE
COALITION FUNDING CHILD CARE CENTRE IN CASTERTON
A Coalition Government will deliver quality child care services to Casterton by providing $1.2 million for the building of a Child and Family Complex.
This $1.2 million investment by the Coalition will see the Casterton Child and Family Complex project delivered, providing desperately needed child care services to Casterton and the region.
The Casterton Community Action Committee has been working hard to secure support for this centre and have met with me on several occasions to outline their needs. Their hard work has been rewarded through this announcement.
The Coalition is standing up for regional families who are under pressure from rising costs. Currently, Casterton has no child care centre and this announcement is a wonderful outcome for families in the region.
The Coalition recognises that investing in children’s well being at an early stage greatly increases their self-confidence, health and educational prospects later in life. We believe all families should have access to quality services for their children, whether they live in the city or the country.
If delivered, this investment should also ease the burden on ratepayers in the Glenelg Shire in the future. Direct investment by the Commonwealth in this project should enable the Shire to save on the expenditure it had outlaid for this project.
The Coalition will encourage skilled professionals to stay in regional towns which they would otherwise leave due to a lack of quality child care.
The Casterton Child and Family Complex will be a one-stop shop for all early childhood needs. The Glenelg Council have supported the development of the plans for this centre and the Community Action Committee has been relentless in their advocacy for a centre.
At the 2007 election Labor promised 260 new child care centres but recently scrapped the plan claiming that there was no demand for new centres. Labor is ignoring the needs of towns like Casterton to fund their massive budget blow outs.
The Labor Government has also slashed the subsidies to parents paying childcare fees and capped the Child Care Tax Rebate, making it even harder for working parents to afford child care.
While the cost of living and housing affordability is soaring, Labor has cut more than $12. 6 million in funding for Occasional Care and scraped Family Day Care start-up grants of $1500 and $5000 for Remote Area Family Day Care.
