Following compelling representations from our community, south west Victoria has been promised it will be one of the centres to receive a full Medicare licence for its Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.
While the latest budget listed the number of new MRI Medicare licences, Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan said that strong community lobbying had gained a commitment from the Government that south west Victoria would be one of the locations.
“Along with the community, I will continue to fight to ensure that the south west receives the access to health services it deserves.
“Although the funding will not come into effect until the end of 2012, the decision is a step towards providing health services and access for western Victoria already available in other major centres,” he said.
“The community case on the need for this licence has been compelling, and I would like to recognise the work of Dr John Hounsell who has been championing the MRI licence for a number of years.
“The fully funded Medicare licence will mean that MRI scans are able to be bulk-billed, making the MRI scans affordable for local people.
“Having to travel to Geelong to get a scan when someone is already facing health issues is a tough challenge. This funding will allow local patients to access an MRI scan much closer to home, and at the same price as those in the city.
“Together with the community, I will not give up fighting for the health services south west Victoria deserves.
