“The Warrnambool Healthy Communities Initiative aims to reduce obesity in adults with a disability or caring responsibility by improving healthy eating and physical activity,” Mr Tehan said.
The program, which is in partnership with the Corangamite and Moyne Shire Councils will utilise three national programs; Heartmoves, Heart Foundation Walking and Austcycle. The funding will allow the project to further develop awareness campaigns, Active Oceans programs and healthy food programs.
“I am pleased that two of our wonderful local councils have received this funding which will help them tackle the issue of obesity in our local communities,” Mr Tehan said.
Mr Tehan encouraged local councils interested in applying for a grant in the third phase of the Healthy Community Initiative, expected to open mid 2011, to visit www.health.gov.au/tenders or call the Department of Health and Ageing on 1800 020 103.
