Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, is appealing to the government to stop another manufacturing business closing, with Nigretta Furniture in Hamilton likely to shut its doors if urgent government funding is not provided.
Nigretta specialises in quality hardwood bedroom furniture, and supports 17 FAHCSIA disability-funded individuals in meaningful employment. Without government funding, Nigretta will be forced to close, leaving 17 local people with disabilities without jobs.
Mr Tehan spoke in Parliament today, urging the government to intervene and save this valuable manufacturing business, which contributes so much to the local community.
“The current operating climate for manufacturing in Australia is grim. The market for high quality furniture of this kind has all but disappeared. This niche, value-adding, disability support provider needs government assistance to continue,” Mr Tehan said.
“I have written to the Minister and the Parliamentary Secretary on this issue asking for action. It makes absolutely no financial sense at all to let Nigretta close.
“The government is meant to work in partnership with disability providers and not hang them out to dry at the eleventh hour. This is a deplorable position.
“The government needs to act and it needs to act now. If Nigretta closes what will happen to the 17 individuals who will lose their jobs?
“What disability employment provider will step in to replace the current service provider, Vantage Inc.? We need answers from the government and we need them now.”
