Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan today confirmed that sheepmeat producers are the latest in a growing list of agricultural producers to be seriously threatened under the Gillard government’s proposed Carbon Tax.
Research released by the Sheepmeat Council of Australia and the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) shows that sheepmeat producers in places like Casterton, Hamilton, Lake Bolac and Willaura are likely to take a large hit under the Gillard government’s new Carbon Tax, with an expected 16 per cent loss in business revenue.
Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, said it is time the Labor government admitted the impacts that their proposed carbon tax will have on farming communities.
“This research, released by the Sheepmeat Council of Australia and the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) showing that sheepmeat producers in places like Casterton, Hamilton, Lake Bolac and Willaura will suffer a 16 per cent loss under the Gillard government’s Carbon Tax comes on the back of research released last week stating that grain farmers would be hit by additional annual costs of $36,882.
“I can’t understand how Julia Gillard can continue to deny the effects her Carbon Tax is going to have on rural and regional communities not only in south-western Victoria, but right across Australia when the evidence is undeniable”, Mr Tehan said today.
“This is sadly only the beginning – I am certain that as the Labor government finally begins to release some detail on their proposed Carbon Tax, more and more industries will realise that they will be severely impacted, and that our economy is going to suffer as a result.
“Sheepmeat producers in Australia will endure a 16 percent loss in business revenue under the government’s proposed carbon tax – this will seriously hurt local sheepmeat producers in our community just as the industry was receiving positive returns.
“This independent research, conducted by the Australian Farm Institute, shows that under a carbon tax price of $35 per tonne, an average local sheepmeat producer would have more than $6,000 in extra costs added into their businesses five years after the introduction of a carbon tax.
“This is further evidence to support the calls for Julia Gillard to hold an election on whether Australia should introduce a Carbon Tax.”
