Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan is encouraging Wannon residents to have their say on a carbon tax by signing a petition being circulated through his offices.
“The Productivity Report on international climate policies has confirmed this month that none of our major trading partners has an economy-wide carbon tax in place.
“Other countries are showing that you don’t need a carbon tax to take action on climate change. The Coalition is of this view too, with a Direct Action plan of incentives for the lowest-cost reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
“Julia Gillard wants to place Australia in splendid isolation, imposing a carbon tax which would push up electricity, petrol, gas and food prices. The Labor Government has refused to allow a national plebiscite on the introduction of a carbon tax, which would have allowed every person to have their say on this issue.
“That is why the Coalition is circulating a nation-wide petition, to allow people who are against the carbon tax the opportunity to have their say on a carbon tax.
“The PC report noted that an ETS or carbon tax “will directly increase product costs according to their emissions intensity, with these costs being passed on to consumers and user industries” (page 154).
“Australia is taking stronger climate action than many competitor nations; to unilaterally add a carbon tax on top of that will only disadvantage our exporters, send jobs overseas, and potentially drive up global emissions in sectors such as steel and metal smelting. This would directly affect local jobs and the cost of living in our region in Western Victoria, and is of real concern.
“That is why it is important for all people who are concerned about the Labor Government’s carbon tax to sign this petition.
“Petitions are available from my electorate offices at 190 Gray Street, Hamilton or 73 Kepler Street, Warrnambool. Alternatively, people can email me at dan.tehan.mp@aph.gov.au and I will send out an electronic copy of the petition to be circulated, or people can phone 1300 131 692 for a copy to be posted out to them or it can be downloaded here as a pdf.”
Petitions are requested to be returned as soon as possible to either of Mr Tehan’s offices, with the intention of presenting those received by 4 July 2011 to the House of Representatives before the Winter Recess. Petitions received later than this will be tabled at a later date.
