Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan is encouraging Wannon residents to ask and know the organ and tissue donation wishes of their loved ones.
“The DonateLife ‘Know their wishes, OK?’ campaign prompts Australians to make sure they know the organ and tissue donation wishes of family members, because they will be asked to confirm the donation wishes of the deceased,” Dan Tehan said.
“It is essential that people know their loved ones’ donation decisions if we are to increase Australia’s family consent rate, which is currently less than 60 per cent. We need to talk about our organ and tissue donation wishes today.
“Australia has achieved a 19 per cent increase in organ donation and transplantation outcomes in the year to date (as at 31 May 2011), with 416 Australians receiving life-saving and life-changing transplants from 141 deceased organ donors,” Mr Tehan said.
This represents the highest donation and transplantation outcomes for the same period since national records began.
“Although more Australians are discussing organ and tissue donation wishes, 40 per cent of Australians still don’t know the donation wishes of their loved ones. One in three Australians are unsure about how to start the conversation with their family.”
In 2010, the first full year of implementation of the national reform program to increase organ and tissue donation rates, 309 organ donors saved the lives of 931 Australians. These were the highest donation and transplantation outcomes since national records began. Tissue donors significantly improved the lives of many more Australians.
“If more Australians asked and knew the donation wishes of their loved ones we could save and improve the lives of more Australians on national transplant waiting lists.”
“We need to normalise the discussion about organ and tissue donation and know the wishes of our loved ones, and I encourage everyone in Wannon to discuss this important subject,” Mr Tehan added.
