Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, is pleased to announce that local artist, Catherine Bailey of Portland, has received a grant of $4,600 for a project to be showcased at local Upwelling Festival held in Portland later this year.
Ms Bailey has received the grant as part of the Regional Arts Fund Round 1 of project grants funding, and it will go towards a project entitled What Lies Beneath.
“This is a wonderful achievement for Ms Bailey, and it is testament to the quality of artistry that is available in our region. I congratulate Ms Bailey on her success, and on this recognition of the quality of her art,” Mr Tehan said.
“Ms Bailey’s project, What Lies Beneath, will be a wonderful addition to the Upwelling Festival, which is a fantastic community festival organised by the Portland Bay Rotary Club.
“This year’s festival, to be held on Saturday 29 October, promises to be a fun-packed day full of activities and entertainment – from the free breakfast starting at 8am, to the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet, Marine Environment Talks and a total of seven local artwork installations to enjoy through the Julia Street Creative Space.”
Ms Bailey will create a large sculptural Sea Hammock Project called ‘What Lies Beneath’, which will be placed on the foreshore near the festival site. It will create a 15m long installation that will hang 3m off the ground and it is designed to give the audience an experience of walking under the sea.
“The Upwelling Festival is based on the natural phenomena of the Bonney Upwelling, and it celebrates the importance of our natural ocean resources on our rich local fishing and tourism industry,” Mr Tehan said.
“The work Rotary and other service organisations do for our community is fantastic – it is community volunteerism at its best, and this is just another wonderful way in which Rotary is contributing to our community wellbeing.”
Round 2 of this year’s Regional Arts Fund Grants will close on Monday 15 August for projects that commence after January 2012, and information on how to apply can be found at http://www.rav.net.au/funding-and-resources/fund
