Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, is shocked after learning that the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association is trying to appeal the Fair Work Australia ruling that meant students could go back to working after school.
Mr Tehan said that the Unions were trying to throw common-sense out the door in launching an appeal to stop country students working after school.
“Earlier this month, Fair Work Australia saw sense and overturned Julia Gillard’s decision on the three hour minimum for the retail award, allowing retailers to give school students one and a half hour shifts from July under strict conditions which protected workers,” Mr Tehan said.
“This appeal by the ACTU and the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association is very disappointing. The Unions are trying to delay what was finally a common-sense ruling.
“I spoke to Leticia Harrison last night and she is astounded that the Unions would seek to overturn such a common-sense position.
“The Fair Work Australia ruling was finally a step in the right direction, and now the Unions want to overturn it.
“The only bright spot in this appeal is that I hope retailers will use this opportunity to also argue for flexibility before school so that students can do a paper round again. These students still do not have their jobs back under Fair Work Australia’s recent ruling, and we all know that it’s not much good getting your paper delivered after school.”
