Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, today warned that the cotton industry has joined the list of agricultural producers to be seriously threatened under the Gillard government’s proposed Carbon Tax.
Research released by the Australian Farm Institute shows that the cotton industry is likely to take a large hit under the Gillard government’s new Carbon Tax, with an expected 16 per cent loss in business revenue.
Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, said it is time the Labor government admitted the impacts that their proposed carbon tax will have on farming communities.
“This research, released by Australian Farm Institute, has considered a ‘model’ farm of 400 ha irrigated cotton. For a cotton plantation of this size, a $36 a tonne carbon tax will cause an 8.5 per cent income loss under the Gillard government’s Carbon Tax – cotton farmers would be hit by additional annual costs of $47 237,” Mr Tehan said today.
“This is yet another agricultural industry that is going to be affected by Julia Gillard’s Carbon Tax.
“Already we know that the sheepmeat industry and cropping farmers are going to be severely impacted by the tax – the cotton industry is just the next in what is turning out to be a very long line of industries that are going to suffer under the Gillard Labor government’s Carbon Tax.
“The evidence is racking up as to how greatly this tax will impact rural and regional communities not only in south-western Victoria, but right across Australia.
The National Farmers Federation have confirmed that they will be releasing further reports on the impact of a carbon tax on beef, dairy, rice, sugar, pork and wine producers over the coming weeks.
“Given what we have already seen it is more than likely the news will not be good for our local farmers.
“It is time for Julia Gillard to ask the people what they want, and to hold an election on whether Australia should introduce a Carbon Tax.”
