Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan in Question Time today asked Bill Shorten, the Minister representing the Minister for Small Business, if small businesses would be forced to pay the carbon tax on fuel they use.
Allen’s Transport is a small business with 22 local employees, operating in Portland and Warrnambool. It runs 10 trucks locally which are 3 tonne or greater in size.
In his response, Mr Shorten was not able to detail whether Mr Allen’s trucks would or would not be exempt, even though the Prime Minister has ruled out the tax applying to small business people.
Mr Allen says, “It looks like the carbon tax on fuel will apply to small businesses like mine which operates trucks over 3 tonnes.
“Julia Gillard said small business people will not be affected by a carbon tax on fuel, yet once again it looks like she is misleading us.
“The devil will be in the detail and I think it is wrong for the government to announce that fuel will be exempt before providing the facts,” Mr Allen said.
“Once again, it looks like the Prime Minister is not providing the Australian people with the full detail on what she has planned,” Mr Tehan said.
“She said before the last election that ‘there will be no carbon tax under a government I lead’, yet she is introducing a carbon tax.
“Now she is saying small business people do not have to worry about a petrol price increase, yet it would seem that small business people providing freight services locally will be slugged by a carbon tax on the fuel they use.”
