Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan is calling for nominations for exceptional volunteers in our local community, to be recognised at an awards ceremony as part of the United Nations tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10).
Volunteers who give their time to the local community will be recognised with awards in up to 10 different categories. The awards, promoted by the Commonwealth government, will help celebrate the United Nations tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10).
Mr Tehan is pleased to support the National Volunteer Awards campaign, which will recognise the many individual volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to our local community and acknowledge organisations with innovative models of volunteering.
“Volunteering is an essential part of a socially inclusive society and helps all Australian people to feel valued and have the opportunity to participate in community life,” Mr Tehan said.
“2011 marks the tenth anniversary of the International year of Volunteers. The theme for worldwide celebrations is ‘Inspire the Volunteer in You’ – recognising that everyone can be a volunteer and make a valuable contribution to their community. The National Volunteer Awards are a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate the tremendous efforts of Australian volunteers in their own communities,” Mr Tehan said.
Throughout July and August, members of the community are asked to nominate outstanding volunteers and organisations within our local community, in the following categories:
• MP’s Volunteer of the Year Award
• Junior Volunteer Award (17 and under)
• Young Volunteer Award (18-25 years)
• Education Award
• Environment Award
• Long-term Commitment to Community Service Award
• Business Volunteer Award
• Innovation in Volunteering Award (for an organisation or individual)
• New organisation Award
• Emergency Management Award
Awards will be presented later in the year in December 2011. Nomination forms are available by contacting Mr Tehan’s office on 03 5561 6405 and nominations close on 31 August 2011.
