$125,000 GREEN ARMY FUNDING FOR PORTLAND’S SMELTER WALK
A $125,000 Green Army project has been announced for Portland’s Smelter Walk if a Coalition Government is elected, said Liberal Candidate for Wannon, Dan Tehan.
Friends of the Great South West Walk and Portland Aluminium have supported the walk which is in need of upgrading to provide wheelchair and buggy access.
“The urgent need for upgrading of the walk was raised with Senator Simon Birmingham and myself at the Community Environment Forum we held in Portland a fortnight ago.
“The Coalition is listening to our local communities and we will direct Green Army funding to local projects that will benefit those communities,” said Mr Tehan.
The Green Army is a training program for young people that will tackle local environmental projects across Australia and, once established, provide a work force of up to 15,000 people.
“We want to help more young Victorians to improve their local environment while gaining valuable employment experience.
“This Green Army funding will give vital support to our valuable volunteers who already do so much to protect local environments,” said Mr Tehan.
“The purpose of the Green Army, as part of our Direct Action Plan, is to see practical action on the environment rather than just hitting people with a damaging Emissions Trading Scheme, which does not help local communities.
“Labor are all talk but no action on the environment, they have cut Landcare funding by $11 million in this year’s budget, as part of an $80 million cut to the ‘Caring for our Country’ program.
“The Coalition’s Green Army will see real action being taken on the environment in Portland,” concluded Mr Tehan.
