“The HEYWIRE competition is now open to people aged 16 - 22 to submit a story about life in Australia outside the major cities, so basically, what it is like to live in Wannon,” said Mr Tehan.
The Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan is advising all young people in Wannon that this is your chance to be part of something big.
“The HEYWIRE competition is now open to people aged 16 - 22 to submit a story about life in Australia outside the major cities, so basically, what it is like to live in Wannon,” said Mr Tehan.
“Your story can be created in any form of media: text, video, photography or audio. If you are selected as one of the winners your story will be featured on ABC Local Radio, ABC Radio National, triple j and abc.net.au.
“You’ll also win a trip to participate in the Heywire Youth Issues Forum in Canberra in February 2012. The Heywire Forum is a chance for the participants to develop outstanding ideas and proposals that will create change in their local communities.
“During last year’s forum I had the opportunity to meet local winner Bethany Evans, from Timboon, at Parliament House. We had a great discussion about the changes to Youth Allowance and how it has had such a detrimental impact on young people in Wannon,” said Mr Tehan.
Bethany Evans has fond memories of the competition; "You don't really realise what winning Heywire means until you look back on the week and realise that was possibly the greatest thing I've ever been a part of," she said.
"Heywire gave me a sense of empowerment and allowed me to meet some of the most amazing and inspiring young people in the country," Bethany said.
“Many past Heywire winners have come from Wannon and I encourage you all to give it a go and let people know what living in this part of Australia means to you,” concluded Mr Tehan.
Visit www.abc.net.au/heywire to find out more about Heywire or to submit an entry. Entires close at 5pm on Monday 19 September 2011.
