“The Coalition knows that people with disability, their carers and families deserve a better deal. The Commission’s Final Report is an important step towards providing a better deal for these Australians and I hope that this can be achieved in a non-partisan way.
Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan has welcomed the public release of the Productivity Commission’s Final Report into Disability Care and Support.
“In recent visits to local disability services and carers groups, and a visit to Wannon by the Shadow Minister for Disabilities, Carers and the Voluntary Sector, Mitch Fifield, it was very obvious that the current system of support for people with disability is broken,” said Mr Tehan.
“The Coalition knows that people with disability, their carers and families deserve a better deal. The Commission’s Final Report is an important step towards providing a better deal for these Australians and I hope that this can be achieved in a non-partisan way.
“The Coalition has long maintained that providing better support for people with disability should be core government business. The Commission’s Final Report affirms this view, stating that: “Funding of the scheme should be a core function of government”.
“We’ve called for the Productivity Commission’s work to be referred to COAG and the Government have agreed to do that so this is where the hard work will begin.
“The Victorian State Government has already indicated their willingness to achieve this reform, with Mary Wooldridge announcing recently that they will offer to conduct the first trial of the scheme. So I am really looking forward to seeing the States and Federal Government working cooperatively on this.
“The Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu, has stated that "The Coalition will take a national leadership role to ensure that Victorians with disabilities, their families and carers get the significant support and care they need," so the spirit of cooperation is there and this is great news for Victoria,” said Mr Tehan.
“The Coalition has strongly supported the work of the Productivity Commission inquiry and congratulates Commissioners Patricia Scott and John Walsh AM on their dedication to tackling this incredibly complex issue.
“The Coalition will work constructively to see this complex disability reform implemented correctly and Australians with a disability, and their carers, expect this to be done in a cooperative manner,” said Mr Tehan.
