$125,000 GREEN ARMY FUNDING FOR CORANGAMITE SHIRE
A $125,000 Green Army project within the Corangamite Shire will become a reality if the Coalition is elected to Government, said Liberal candidate for Wannon, Dan Tehan.
The Green Army is a training program for young people that will tackle local environmental projects across Australia and, once established, provide a work force of up to 15,000 people.
“We want to help more young Victorians to improve their local environment while gaining valuable employment experience,” said Mr Tehan.
“Green Army participants will work together with local Landcare and other community environment groups, such as the Mt Elephant and Mt Leura Management Committees, to achieve on the ground benefits for our local natural environment.”
These local projects will include planting trees, weed control, walking track maintenance, fauna surveys and seed collection among other worthwhile activities.
“This Green Army funding will give vital support to our valuable volunteers who already do so much to protect local environments,” said Mr Tehan.
“Getting young people involved in caring for their local environment has many benefits such as the development of a good work ethic, valuable work experience and a better knowledge and appreciation of local natural environments.
“The Coalition believes that we need to be taking real action on our environment by getting local people involved in the caring of their own natural resources.
“The purpose of the Green Army is to see practical action on the environment rather than just hitting people with a damaging Emissions Trading Scheme, which does not help local communities,” said Mr Tehan.
“Labor are all talk but no action on the environment, in fact they have cut Landcare funding by $11 million in this year’s budget, as part of an $80 million cut to the ‘Caring for our Country’ program.
“The Coalition’s Green Army will support Landcare and other environmental volunteers to see a greater number of environmental projects achieved locally.
“The Coalition’s Green Army will see real action being taken on the environment in Wannon,” concluded Mr Tehan.
