Michael McCormack, Kelly O’Dwyer and Dan Tehan have expressed their outrage after being given just 20 seconds per bill to outline their constituents concerns on the carbon tax legislation.
The three members highlighting that they were given five minutes to speak on a bill of more than 1200 pages – that is just one minute for every 240 pages of legislation.
“The Gillard Government’s incompetence knows no bounds and its legislative agenda is all about maintaining political power at the expense of Australia’s national interest,” they said.
“The carbon tax will cripple the Riverina’s agricultural sector and small businesses as well as having a direct and costly impact on families,” said Michael McCormack.
“Self-funded retirees, small business and aspirational families all told me at the Higgins Carbon Tax Forum that they will be hit hard by this unnecessary, unwanted and undemocratic tax,” said Kelly O’Dwyer.
“Given the detrimental impact that this will have on key sectors of the electorate of Wannon, including the dairy, meat and grain sectors, local manufacturing and road construction, the fact that I was given just five minutes to speak on behalf of my electorate is an outrage,” said Dan Tehan.
“This is the most complex piece of legislation we have seen this parliamentary term, and yet the government allows us to speak on behalf of our constituents for only 300 seconds – that’s just one second for every four pages of legislation.”
In our five minutes we all pointed out that “this is a deceitful piece of legislation that strikes right at the heart of Australia’s international competitiveness. All it will do is send Australian jobs and industries overseas.”
“To make matters worse, after we have sent the jobs and industry offshore, we will then buy the carbon permits from the countries that have benefited from this exporting of jobs and industries for a cost of $3.5 billion in 2020, and $57 billion by 2050.”
All three members declared that despite the Government’s appalling efforts to silence them that they would not be gagged by the Government and would continue to speak out against the carbon tax on behalf of their electorates.
