“The Coalition is committed to the universal observation of Remembrance Day and the Recommit to Remembrance Day campaign is a Coalition-initiated, bi-partisan campaign to encourage more Australians to observe the traditional one minute’s silence on Remembrance Day.
8 November 2011
“On Friday 11 November I have the great honour to be guest speaker at the Portland RSL Remembrance Day Service,” said the Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan.
“Following Remembrance Day in 2010, there was widespread community concern about the demise of the observation of a traditional one minute’s silence on Remembrance Day. This concern was reinforced in press coverage, with articles about banks, universities, businesses, government departments, amongst others, not pausing for the traditional period of silence.
“The Coalition is committed to the universal observation of Remembrance Day and the Recommit to Remembrance Day campaign is a Coalition-initiated, bi-partisan campaign to encourage more Australians to observe the traditional one minute’s silence on Remembrance Day.
“I am very pleased that the Government has now joined the Coalition in the campaign, making it a truly bi-partisan approach to this significant day.
“The campaign encourages all Australians to pause from their daily activities at 11am to reflect upon, remember and commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have been killed in wars in defence of Australian values.
“Remembrance Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is an international day of remembrance to commemorate the end of World War One, and also to remember the fallen of all wars since then - no matter which country they fought for.
“When the clock strikes 11am in Australia and the across the world, people pause to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of the fallen. Observing Remembrance Day is both a powerful Australian tradition in its own right, but is unique because it links Australia’s involvement in the defence of freedom with the struggle of others who fought along side us.
“I would like to ask all of the people in Wannon to make the time to pause at 11am on 11 November to respect the sacrifice of those who fought for the freedom we take for granted, and I also ask you to buy a red poppy to support the RSL, who give such tremendous support to our veterans and their families.”
