Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan is participating in Movember (the month formally known as November), which is a month long, global initiative to raise awareness, support and funding for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and male depression.
“Movember is a hugely successful campaign to build awareness of men’s health issues and supports charities such as Beyond Blue and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia,” said Mr Tehan.
Movember is the world’s largest non‐government funder of prostate cancer research. The Movember movement began in 2003 when friends in Melbourne Australia, decided to bring back the moustache. They soon realised their hairy upper lips sparked many conversations, so they decided to put their Mo‐growing towards a cause. There are now official Movember campaigns in 10 countries – Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South African, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
“Many men are reluctant to discuss the health issues they face – whether with their partner, mates, family or their doctor. As a result, the level of awareness, support and funding is significantly behind that of women’s health causes,” said Mr Tehan.
“I am participating in Movember to increase awareness by getting the conversation started, educating men about the health risks they face and raising funds for research. This is such a worthy cause and the statistics show why we have much more work to do:
• 1 in 3 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 9 men in Australia will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.
• Each year close to 3,300 Australian men die of prostate cancer – this is equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually.
• 1 in 8 men will experience depression at some stage in their life and the suicide rate is 4 times higher for men than women.
“This year I will be taking part in Movember as part of a team called ‘Give That They May Mo’, comprising of members from the Deakin School of Medicine in Warrnambool and friends, and I congratulate them for getting together to support Movember.
“Therefore, I would appreciate your support during Movember. You can donate to the ‘Give That They May Mo’ team in either my Hamilton or Warrnambool offices, follow the links on my website www.dantehan.com.au or go to my Mo‐space on the Movember website at http://au.movember.com/mospace/1442490/.”
