“Julia Gillard has no mandate from the people for this new tax and in the absence of action by other nations; all that the Gillard Government has done today is export jobs and emissions overseas.”
8 November 2011
“The passage of the carbon tax through Parliament today is a confirmation of the Gillard Government’s betrayal of the Australian people, and this will have a huge impact here in Wannon,” said Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan.
“Our Prime Minister, who promised just six days before the last election that “there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead” has completed her unforgivable breach of faith with the Australian people and proven that the Labor Government is beholden to the Greens.”
“Wannon is heavily reliant on agricultural sectors such as dairy, cropping, livestock and meat processing, all of whom will face massive cost increases. The dairy industry alone has estimated a $5,000 to $7000 per annum increase in costs due to the carbon tax, with some producers estimating hits of $10,000 to $15,000 per annum. This will make many of our producers unviable.
“Our road infrastructure is vitally important and already in need of serious investment, however local councils have estimated that a $20 per tonne carbon price will increase road construction costs by 5 per cent. This means more cost pressures for local governments, which will mean higher council rates or less road maintenance.
“This new tax is a blow to the future of manufacturers in Wannon, who are already struggling to compete against cheaper imported goods. If these companies can not compete, we will see many local jobs at risk.
“On the Government’s own figures, three million Australian households will be worse off under the carbon tax which is yet another added burden for families in Wannon who are already stretched to the limit with cost of living increases.
“The tax will increase but the so-called compensation won’t and there will be no compensation for the 5695 hard working small business owners in Wannon, who provide many of the jobs in our towns and communities.”
“On the Government's own figures, many dual income families will actually be worse off once they reach the typical income of a school teacher and a shop assistant; or that of a policeman and a part-time nurse.”
“The longer this tax is in place, the worse the consequences for the economy, jobs and families. It will drive up the cost of living and threaten jobs but it will do absolutely nothing for the environment. This tax is absurd.”
“Julia Gillard has no mandate from the people for this new tax and in the absence of action by other nations; all that the Gillard Government has done today is export jobs and emissions overseas.”
“At the next election, along with Tony Abbott and the Coalition, I will be seeking a mandate from the people of Wannon to repeal this tax.”
“I believe the Coalition’s position is principled, it is clear to all and it will free the economy from the red tape, soaring costs and job losses that the carbon tax will inevitably produce.”
