State and Federal Labor’s incompetence has been showcased yet again, after they announced an additional $5 million in funding last week to strengthen bridges in the south‐west that have already been strengthened.
State Roads Minister Tim Pallas and Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese last week announced upgrades for seven bridges in the Green Triangle region.
In a major embarrassment for both Governments, many of the bridges listed have already had strengthening work completed in the past year.
Member for South West Coast Denis Napthine joined with Member for Wannon Dan Tehan to call for the $5 million allocated to local bridges under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program to be allocated to other desperately needed road projects in the region.
“This is typical Labor incompetence – the left hand doesn’t know what the right is doing!” Denis Napthine said.
“No wonder there are so many problems on our country roads when the State and Federal Ministers don’t even know what works have been done and what still needs doing.”
“Given that Labor has made this announcement to deliver these funds, and given that work has been done on at least four of these projects already, it is beholden on the Federal Labor Government to put this funding into new projects to benefit our region,” Dan Tehan said.
“This shows that the both the State and Federal Labor Governments have lost interest in the Green Triangle Freight Action Plan and have no idea of what work has been carried out,” Denis Napthine said.
Dan Tehan said this was typical of a Federal Labor Government being run by city‐centric Ministers in Canberra who had no idea about what was happening in country Australia.
“This is political game playing and point scoring – but Labor are playing their games with the safety of country road‐users,” Dan Tehan said.
“How State and Federal Labor can announce roads funding for work that has already been completed beggars belief! Labor’s incompetence truly knows no bounds.”
“We welcome the additional roads funding for the region, but urge the Ministers to put the promised $5 million into projects that we all know actually need the funding – like fixing the thousands of dangerous potholes on our major arterial roads and highways,” Denis Napthine said.
