Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan has welcomed the Federal Opposition Leader, the Hon Tony Abbott MHR, to Wannon, on a visit to the region including Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Hawkesdale and Hamilton.
Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan has welcomed the Federal Opposition Leader, the Hon Tony Abbott MHR, to Wannon, on a visit to the region including Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Hawkesdale and Hamilton.
“This is a great opportunity to showcase South West Victoria to the Leader of the Opposition, and for Mr Abbott to be able to hear first‐hand from our local communities the issues that are important to them,” Mr Tehan said.
“Tony Abbott has taken the opportunity to meet with various community groups during his visit to Wannon, and he has heard from our local community groups about various local issues such as: the need for greater Federal funding for local roads; changes to the Youth Allowance rules; the need for improved local health services; the need for employment rules that encourage young people to work; and the importance of sustainable agriculture practices.
“Mr Abbott has met with business people in Warrnambool, and participated in training with the Port Fairy Life Saving Club, heard from heard from Peter’s Project about the need for fairer and improved regional health services and attended a civic reception in his honour hosted by the Warrnambool Shire Council.
“Mr Abbott also visited “Minjah”, east of Hawkesdale, to learn more about sustainable agriculture practices and saw first hand how our local farmers are taking direct action to improve the environment.
“He also attended a dinner with over 200 people to pay tribute to former Member for Wannon, David Hawker’s service to our local community and the nation.
“It is very important that the alternative government is well across all of the local issues for communities across the nation so that when it comes time to develop policies for the next election, we are well‐advised.
“So it is an honour to have Tony Abbott here in Wannon, taking the time to hear first‐hand about the issues that are facing us here locally.
