Our thoughts and prayers are with those dealing with the personal and economic devastation being caused by the extreme flooding in Queensland.
Once again Australians are digging deep to help one another as the rising impact of the floods continues to mount. The volunteer effort to assist, coupled with the generosity to give, is a hallmark of our great country and something which can not help but inspire us all given the adversity so many people are facing.
With many lives lost and thousands of residents rendered homeless, we should all be thankful for our own good fortune as we watch the destruction that has been wreaked on Queensland.
Reflecting the generous spirit of our own community, and keenly aware of the impact of the flooding last year in our own backyard, I would like to advise Wannon constituents of what they can do to help our fellow Australians.
The Queensland Government has launched a financial appeal to help those families and whole communities devastated by the floods. Donations can be made at any major bank or Coles Supermarket, or by visiting www.qld.gov.au/floods .
The Australian Red Cross is leading the relief effort, but is not accepting donations of goods or food at this time.
A family and friends info line has been set up for those concerned about the safety of loved ones in the affected areas of Queensland, the number is 1300 993 191.
The Red Cross are also managing a National Registration Inquiry Service to seek out flood victims. Visit https://emergency.redcross.org.au.
Anyone wanting more information can contact my office on 1300 131 692.
