Panmure and district residents Thursday night gathered at the Recreation Reserve Centre to discuss the damage that has devastated the small community. Representatives from all the local sporting clubs, the UDV as well as Moyne Mayor Jim Doukas, Cr Bernie Harris and staff from Dan Tehan’s office attended the meeting.
A working flood response committee was formed, with Recreation Reserve President Glen Scott taking charge of the flood recovery efforts.
The township will need huge community support over the coming weeks and months to rebuild what has been torn apart by the floods.
When the ground dries in a week or two, the township will be seeking wide support for farmers to help rebuild fences and repair damage to their properties. Fence materials, machinery and willing and able workers will all be desperately needed.
For now, the district is desperate to repair the heart of its community – the Recreation Reserve Centre that is used by over 300 people from around the district.
The group is seeking support from the wider community to help them get their reserve back up and running so they can use it next weekend for scheduled sports matches.
The Panmure working bee will start at 10am this Sunday morning, at the Panmure Recreation Reserve – volunteers from Warrnambool should go via Wangoom as the Panmure Bridge is still closed.
Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing, boots and gloves, and bring any shovels, steel rakes and forks, whipper snippers, mops, brooms, buckets, wheelbarrows, and tools that they have. A BBQ will be supplied for volunteers after the working bee.
Centrelink, the Department of Human Services and Rural Finance will be set up to help with any grant or funding queries local residents or businesses may have. They will have flood packs and community support packs available. Moyne and Corangamite residents are urged to use this opportunity to gain financial advice about flood payments if they need to.
Dan Tehan MP, Denis Napthine MP and Steve Dawkins from the Moyne Shire will be there to help with the cleanup and answer any questions people may have.
Those interested can turn up at 10am on Sunday, or call John Bant on 0408 358 543 or Dan Tehan’s office on 0400 192 205 with any questions.
