Shadow Minister for Tourism, Bob Baldwin, and Member for Wannon Dan Tehan, have attacked the Gillard Government for failing to include Victoria in their Tourism Industry Support Package.
“The Government has committed $5 million to the Queensland Government’s Tourism Industry Support Package and I fully support that commitment,” Mr Baldwin said.
“However, Queensland is not the only area of Australia grappling to let visitors know their regions are open for business.”
“I’m disappointed the Prime Minister, despite being a Victorian, has failed to promise any Federal Government funding for the Victorian tourism industry to help support struggling tourist communities like Halls Gap and Pomonal following the recent Victorian floods,” Mr Tehan said.
“Tourism operators in regional Victoria must be shaking their heads at being ignored by the Gillard Government, especially with the Prime Minister and the Minister for Tourism both being Victorians,” Mr Baldwin said.
“It’s great the Gillard Government is funding a tourism support package for Queensland, but what about Victoria?”
“Today, Member for Wannon Dan Tehan and I are calling on the Gillard Government to match the $1 million funding announced by the Baillieu Government,” Mr Baldwin said.
The Coalition is committed to matching the Baillieu Government’s $1 million programme to support business in areas affected by the floods that are heavily dependent on tourism in 2010‐11. This funding boost is funded from one of the Coalition’s fully offset election commitments.
“The tourism industry in Victoria is open for business. It is important they have the opportunity, like the Queensland industry does, to advertise that fact,” Mr Tehan said.
“Together with the Dan Tehan, I’ll be meeting with tourism operators in Halls Gap and the Grampians to hear their ideas about how to best promote regional Victoria as open for business,” Mr Baldwin said.
