“Prime Minister Gillard today no only broke her promise to the Australian people by announcing her Carbon Tax, but also delivered double‐tax Thursday by forcing her Flood Tax through the House of Representatives and introducing her Carbon Tax,” Mr Tehan said.
“Two days before the last election, the Prime Minister declared to the Australian public that “there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead.”
“But today she announced a Carbon Tax. It shows once again, Labor will go to any means to get elected.
“Today she has broken her promise – and all Australians will now pay for that broken promise with higher electricity and petrol prices.
“Labor is doing nothing to ease the cost of living pressures facing Australian families, and the last thing we need is further petrol and electricity price rises.
“This is particularly so for our country communities who rely heavily on private transport and don’t have access to public transport.
“It is estimated that from the middle of next year, Australian families will pay $300 more for power each year, and they will pay 6½ cents more per litre for petrol.
“There’s a better way to tackle climate change than a massive new electricity and petrol tax. We have a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by direct action, without driving up electricity and petrol prices,” Mr Tehan said.
