Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan is encouraging everyone to take a moment and celebrate the amazing women in their lives for the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day on 8 March this year.
“Australian women make a massive contribution to our society by looking after their families and homes, taking on caring responsibilities and making volunteer contributions,” said Mr Tehan.
“They also make a massive contribution to our economy through paid work. Women today are employed as CEOs, farmers, doctors, police officers, nurses, hairdressers, professors and a thousand other occupations.
“Just over half the Australian population are female and almost 5 million Australian women are in the paid workforce, most combining paid work with volunteer and nurturing roles.”
“Women have had the right to vote federally in Australia since 1902 and have experienced huge changes in their lives. Women replaced men in industry in the First and Second World Wars, took up education opportunities, gained access to equal pay for equal work 40 years ago and since then they juggle family, jobs, home and community.”
“Globally, people now understand that gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is not just a goal in itself, but a key to sustainable development,” Mr Tehan said.
International Women’s Day is complemented by International Men’s Day which is held throughout the world on November 19.
