I am honoured and humbled that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has asked me to serve the Australian people as Minister for Social Services.
I understand the size of my new responsibility. Australians are rightly proud of our social security system and the Government must focus on keeping it sustainable for future generations. I will work hard to support people to move from welfare to work and to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
I am proud of what has been achieved across Veterans’ Affairs, Defence Personnel and Cyber Security.
As Veterans’ Affairs Minister, the Government has delivered an additional $500 million for veterans, made mental health treatment free for anyone with one day’s full-time service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and made the most significant investment in reforming the Department in more than a decade.
In Defence Personnel, the Government has focussed on improving the transition process, so departing personnel are best-placed to take advantage of their post-service careers. This includes ensuring all ADF personnel have access to their necessary personal documentation prior to discharge, establishing a Transition Task Force to improve coordination between Defence and DVA and implementing the Prime Minister’s Veterans Employment program.
The greatest honour is to serve the men and women who have served, and who continue to serve, in defence of our nation. From our oldest living veterans of World War II to the current personnel I met on operations in Iraq, I have been humbled by them and their service.
In cyber security, the Government continues to implement its Cyber Security Strategy and has taken action to protect Australians by targeting offshore cybercriminals. We are also exploring ways to keep Australian citizens and businesses more secure online.
My number one priority will continue to be advocating on behalf of the people of Wannon. I will ensure their views are strongly represented in the Australian Parliament. It is only because of their faith in me that I have been given this opportunity to serve in the Turnbull Cabinet.
